What Are Essential Oils?
If you’ve ever enjoyed the scent of a rose or the smell of an orange peel, then you’ve experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils.
Essential Oils are naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. Essential Oils give plants their distinctive smells, they protect plants, and they play a role in plant pollination. So basically, they're the immune system for the plant, which is why they can help our immune health as well. In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have long been used for food preparation, beauty treatments, and health care practices.
Experience The Effects In Just One or Two Drops!
Oils work differently than herbs, in that they're 50-70% more powerful - for instance, one drop of Peppermint essential oil is equivalent to 28 cups of Peppermint tea!
Since essential oils are highly concentrated when distilled for purity, potency, and efficacy, one drop is often all that is needed to achieve a powerful benefit!
Why Use Essential Oils?
The majority of people start using essential oils because they want to:
The History of Essential Oils
Essential Oils are rapidly becoming popular today, but they’ve actually been used throughout history in many cultures for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits. In fact, if you read the Bible, you'll find over 300 references to essential oils.
The use of essential oils for therapeutic, spiritual, hygienic and ritualistic purposes goes back to a number of ancient civilizations including the Chinese, Indian, Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans who used plant extracts for cosmetics, perfumes, and drugs. In fact, they found several hundred litres of alabaster jars of essential oils in King Tut's tomb. It's actually been documented that Cleopatra opened the first beauty spa and she used essential oils in her treatments.
Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine is famous for saying, "Let food be thy medicine," and he prescribed essential oils for healing over 2,000 years ago.
Frankincense and Myrrh were brought as gifts to baby Jesus. In fact, they were worth as much as gold was during those days, as they were thought to be the most effective forms of plant-based medicine. Frankincense, for instance, was used during that time to reduce bruising. It's also great for the nervous system, so it would have been rubbed on a child after birth to support its growth and development and protect its immune system. Myrrh essential oil is a natural antiseptic, so it would have been rubbed around the umbilical cord to keep that area from getting infected after birth.
A French surgeon, Jean Valnet pioneered the medicinal uses of essential oils. He used them as antiseptics in the treatment of wounded soldiers during World War II.
How To Use Essential Oils
There are 3 main ways to use essential oils: Aromatic, Topical & Internal.
When you get started, we'll send you information on how to incorporate them into your every day life.
Inhale These Gorgeous Scents
Essential oils, when diffused or inhaled, can be very stimulating, calming and soothing.
Diffusers For Every Room
Diffusing essential oils can cleanse and purify the air. Young Living has an amazing line of diffusers to choose from.
Wear Your Favourite Aromas
Diffuser jewellery is a great way to wear essential oils as your perfume or to lift up your mood during the day.
Apply To Your Body
Essential oils can be safely applied neat OR diluted with a carrier oil.
Why You Need A Carrier Oil
Carrier oils are fatty oils with little-to-no scent that are used to dilute essential oils before applying topically or when ingesting. Using a carrier oil helps it work better, because it allows the oil to penetrate deeper into the blood flow layer of the skin. Common carrier oils include: Fractionated Coconut Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Jojoba Oil, Olive Oil, Wheat Germ Oil, Grape Seed Oil, Sesame Seed Oil, Sunflower Oil and many others.
We suggest getting Young Living's V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Oil Complex to dilute your essential oils and to help you make custom blends, formulas, and massage oils. This oil complex nourishes the skin, is non-greasy, has a long shelf life, doesn't clog pores, and will not stain clothes. Young Living has an incredible line of other massage oils as well.
Roll On Wherever You Go
Apply essential oils topically to your skin with roller bottles and a carrier oil.

Basic Safety Tips
The following tips will help you safely enjoy essential oils.
Citrus oils are sensitive to the sun since they are made from the rind of fruit. Avoid direct sunlight to the exposed area for at least 12 hours, as that location may get a skin irritation or burn. Oils applied underneath clothing should be fine.
If an oil starts to burn, skip the water. Use a carrier oil or whole fat milk. Because essential oils don't mix with water, applying water to the area can actually drive the burn in deeper. Ouch!
Avoid These Areas
Never put essential oils in your eyes, inside ear canal, or up your nose. However, you may apply oils around the eye bone in a C shape, on ear cartilage and behind ear bone, or diffuse essential oils.
When applying certain essential oils topically, it's important to use a carrier oil (like Young Living's V-6) to avoid skin sensitivity or reactions.
The majority of all adverse reactions to essential oils by children have been as a direct result of accidental overdose and ingestion in large amounts. Keep out of reach of children. Use child proof safety caps.
Unlike vegetable oils, which are susceptible to rancidity, essential oils are very stable, but should be stored in amber glass to help protect their potency from the degenerative effects of heat, light and air.
